No time to blog.
So here is an update by the weeks in April!!!
Week of April 6th, 2015
Daughter had Surgery. Major Spinal Fusion with 2 rods and 28 screws. 5 days in the hospital, 4-6 weeks recovery. She has had Scoliosis since she was young --in Elementary School. The brace didn't help and we knew once she stopped growing that surgery would be needed. It was a long process of getting ready for surgery--tests, x-rays, meeting with the Dr's. Getting healthy -drinking whey protein shakes, taking calcium and Vitamin D. Also meeting with Dr about anxiety and not to mention making sure she graduates from HS on time!! We wanted to use the Shriner's Hospital for children so we needed to do this before she turned 18. The Shriner's Hospital has the best Spinal Surgeon from the University of Minnesota Hospitals on staff-so we really got the best surgeon in Minnesota!
Surgery went very well. She is a superstar! They had her up and walking the next day. Of course LOTS of pain meds, Rest, physical therapy and nursing care. Help from the whole family and friends. Mother and daughter bonded again so much with the time spent together.
| Carissa resting in her cool room on 6th Floor. Previous days and nights in ICU wasn't so nice of a room, but the staff was wonderful, they took good care of my baby girl! |
Week of April 13th, 2015
We are home and she is recovering. It's a long process with a regular schedule of pain meds, water, food, ice packs, heating pad, help with getting out of bed and to the bathroom at first. Then it gradually got better. Her spine needed lots of rest for healing. Her muscles needed lots of stretching and that resulting in lots of pain. Regular walks and rest and she made it thru it. Like a rock star. Also help from friends visiting and lots of movie watching. Burlesque is a favorite. The best gift she received was a pack of straws-really need those when you are in bed drinking water.
And balloons, flowers, cards, gifts, visitors and a coconut? to cheer her up!
